In 2024, the landscape of travel to Europe is set to change drastically, and it is not good news for U.S. travelers. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be introduced, requiring visa-exempt nationals from over 60 countries, including the United States, to obtain travel authorization before entering most European countries.
ETIAS is a mandatory travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals traveling to any of the 30 European countries participating in the program. This authorization will be linked to the traveler’s passport and remain valid for up to three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows for short-term stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
For U.S. travelers accustomed to the ease of presenting their United States passport and hopping on a flight to Europe, this new requirement is a significant blow to the power of the U.S. passport. Starting in 2024, travelers will no longer have that privilege, as they will need to secure an ETIAS travel authorization in advance.
To obtain an ETIAS travel authorization, U.S. travelers can complete the application form either through the official ETIAS website or the ETIAS mobile application. The application fee for ETIAS is EUR 7, with some travelers possibly exempt from this fee.
Most applications are processed within minutes, offering a relatively straightforward process. However, in some cases, the process may take up to four days. In situations where additional information or documentation is requested or an interview is required, the processing time could be extended up to 14 or 30 days, respectively.
The ETIAS travel authorization’s implementation means that U.S. travelers can no longer rely solely on their U.S. passports for entry to most European countries. The prior simplicity of buying an airline ticket and showing their passport at the border will no longer be enough.
To ensure a smooth travel experience, U.S. travelers must plan and apply for the ETIAS travel authorization well in advance of their planned journey. Moreover, travelers must pay close attention to the accuracy of their application, as any mistakes may lead to a denial of entry.
