Susan Dixon – Core Values Champion – Q1 2023
I have worked for Farmer Law PC for 3 ½ years, since November 2019.
Team Manager of the H-2A Team – I help train new employees, answer random questions, review filings/drafts of documents, check in with my teammates to make sure they are doing well and have what they need to be successful, meet with managers to pass along my team’s needs to upper management, do monthly one-on-one check-ins with each member of my team, and review people’s timecards and 15Five weekly check-ins.
I like hanging out with my kids and with friends. Recently, I’ve been axe-throwing, which was a lot of fun as well as rather therapeutic (!). I like going to the beach/traveling, watching movies, mini-golfing, shopping, getting pedicures, and reading books.
Yes! Loryn and Stephanie got me hooked on Jane the Virgin! I also recently binge-watched the entire Bridgerton season about Queen Charlotte.
This changes nearly daily. Right now, Levitating by Dua Lipa is right up there as well as I Just Wanna Shine by Fitz & the Tantrums because those songs make me happy! My kids and I sing to them in the car. I also really like Castaway by the Zac Brown Band because of the harmonies, and it makes me feel like I’m on a beach somewhere.
I love foreign languages! I have studied 4 foreign languages enough to be able to carry on a very short conversation about weather, food, or what I’m wearing. I know a moderately useful phrase in several languages, and I can insult you in French (although I would never tell an actual French person that I’m going to shoot them in the knees!). In Italian, I can tell you that I’m looking for my suitcases. In German, I can tell you that I have no money. In Portuguese, I can ask you if you have a room reserved in my name, and I can count to 6 in Japanese. Obviously, in Spanish we could hold a whole conversation. My parents are both fluent in German, but they only taught us the phrases for ‘Go to bed!’ and ‘Brush your teeth!’ among other very practical phrases.
We offer world class communication and responsiveness to all of our clients and our comprehensive approach can simplify even the most complicated of visa programs.
I love my job! I love my coworkers and how closeknit, supportive, and cohesive we are! I also enjoy providing a service for our clients that helps them to be able to grow their own businesses and/or provide a food source for our country.
Cover YA BUTT!!! Document, document, document.
I walk around (and also check in via Teams with our remote friends) and talk to each of my coworkers on a regular basis. I am pretty good at reading body language (likely from having kids!), so I can usually tell when something is wrong. If I’m not getting them to open up to me, but I can tell something is still wrong, I try to do something silly to make them laugh so that it dispels some of the tension. Works on my 7-year-old son, and usually works on my coworkers, too! One example of a positive impact on our team dynamics is our weekly H-2A team meetings each Thursday – because I walk around and/or check in with people regularly, I usually know at least one thing that people have coming up, so I’ll ask them about it during the team meeting, which then gets other people talking. Our team has really gotten to know each other in the last few months, even though we’re such a big team. I try to call on each person on the team to share something, especially if I see that someone hasn’t had an opportunity to talk yet.
I try to think about how a decision could affect all the people involved. One example is this: after a particularly stressful situation with a last-minute client filing, a couple of paralegals on our team were experiencing very low morale. Thankfully, they felt comfortable enough to talk to me about it. Then Nery and I discussed the situation, and we came up with a solution to reassign this client so that the paralegals could experience some relief from the ongoing stress.
Since I have been a paralegal for a long time, I try to think about who all needs to know whatever it is that needs to be communicated, and then I think of the method of communication that will reach those people, and which would also be in a format easy to save for later. I also encourage everyone to feel free to message me/video chat/come sit on my plaid cube and talk to me if they have any concerns.
